Swimming in the river

Water temperature

The water in the St. Lawrence River is often cold, even in summer, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 18°C depending on the season. Swimming can be refreshing, but it's important to be prepared for cold water.

Sharp rocks

The shores of the St. Lawrence River, especially in rocky areas, can feature sharp rocks, often covered with mussels, algae, or other marine organisms. These rocks can be slippery and dangerous for bare feet. It is strongly recommended that you wear water shoes or suitable sandals to protect your feet from cuts and potential injuries.

Algae and marine fauna

Seaweed is common in certain areas of the river, particularly near rocks. Some can be slippery and interfere with swimming, while others can cling to the skin. Marine life, such as seals, crabs, and fish, are also part of the ecosystem. Although seals are generally harmless, it is advisable to keep a safe distance to avoid any disturbance or unexpected interaction.
